A Study on Depression of Hemodialysis Patients

Abstract
This study was conducted to assess degree of depression of hemodialysis patients, and to determine the influence of self-concept and Locus of Control on depression.
The subjects were 28 adult patients being treated for hemodialysis at the artificial kidney unit of three hospitals in Seoul and Taejeon.
Data was collected from Aug. 1, 1984 to Fet. 28, 1985, referencing the Beck¢¥s Inventory for depression, Jacox and Stewart¢¥s Health self-concept scale, and Walston¢¥s Health Locus of Control Scale.
The analysis of data was done by use of percentage, 1-test, Analysis of Variance, Pearson Correlation Coefficient, and Multiple Stepwise Regression.
The findings of this study are as follows;
1. There were no signicant differences between dermographic characteristics and variables except highly significant difference between depression and occupation(t= -2.38, p=0.025).
2. There was no signicant correlation with the depression and Locus of Control(r= 0.3064,p=0.056), tut highly significant negative correlation with the depression and self-concept(r=-0.6445, 9=0.000).
3. 41.53% of depression can be explained by self concept and 1.1% by Locus of Control.
